A Short Biography

LOOKMAN was born in a south of London in the 1950's as Raymond Whiting. His father was English with roots in craft arts and his mother from an educated Irish landed family with literary connections. Unable to continue his education, he was to train as a Chartered Accountant, but preferred politics. He became first a successful political press officer, magazine publisher and campaigner. This led to his election as the second youngest district and youngest parish councillor in the UK.

His family was unusually religious for England, and he pursued an enthusiasm for the truth, which ended with an interest in the philosophy and Sufism. From this, he derives his pseudonym ‘Lookman’, the wise sage who advises his son in the Qur'an. His later writing is laced with multi-cultural strands born of studies in anthropology, religions and mythologies.

Later in life, he graduated in Development Economics with honours and has since studied at a postgraduate level. He is married and has four daughters.

His Writing and Drama

Lookman has a passion to write innovatively for his audience. This is something he learnt as a political press officer. He writes to entertain, using plots to mislead the reader in ways that are novel, humorous and edifying before reaching the final climax. His writing career began when he discussed filling radio broadcast time. He wrote and produced three consecutive radio plays for BBC Radio. He has since published three books: ‘Children from the Sea', ‘Henry and the Alien' and ‘Mihte's Quest: Kids in the Underworld'. There are four more in books in an unpublished state. His favourite genres are fantasy, humour, adventure and historical children's fiction.

Film screenwriter

Instead of pursuing his writing career, he has since concentrated on writing screenplays: notably ‘Children from the Sea', ‘Henrietta's Odyssey' and a television series. It began when a Hollywood Producer approached him to make a television film out of his first Mihte book. The screenplays use a number of innovative special effects and light regimes. This is to generate interest and greater audience enjoyment.

Animation screenwriter and producer

He is currently in negotiations to develop a children's television cartoon series with an award winning animation Production Company. This is the first of a number of such ventures he hopes to develop. His company Lookman Ltd was set up for this purpose.
